Long Covid & Diet

Long-COVID is now being increasingly recognised both in the medical world and the media.

Long-COVID is also referred to as ‘Post-COVID Syndrome’ and it is defined as “symptoms that develop during or following an infection consistent with COVID, continue for more than 12 weeks and are not explained by an alternative diagnosis”.

These symptoms can include fatigue, headaches, cough, loss of taste and smell, sore throat, delirium, muscle aches, breathlessness, chest heaviness or pressure, palpitations, as well as skin rashes and gastrointestinal problems. Optimal nutrition is vital following any illness, including COVID.

Ways a registered dietitian can help:

       restore energy levels

  • Practical advice around taste and smell loss or changes

  • Help manage weight loss and build muscle lost during the illness

  • Address any gut related symptoms

  • Tailored advice if you are struggling with shopping or cooking

  • Help manage weight gain as a result of inactivity

  • Guide you through the variety of dietary interventions being suggested by some doctors including the use of the low histamine diet and high dose supplements.

Working with a registered dietitian ensures that you are getting the most up to date, evidenced based dietary advice. In addition, Elaine has over 2 years experience of dealing with Long Covid herself.
